A successor to the SGI Challenge and SGI Power Challenge, the SGI 21000 was introduced in July of 1999 as a midrange server for 2-8 processors. Design goals included increased scalability and modularity in comparison to previous SMP designs, resulting in a concept called 'Scalable Shared Memory Multiprocessor (S2MP).
From an 7/23/1999 article in HPC Wire- “Demands for high-performance data storage, analysis, management and delivery are outpacing the growth of most server solutions today. Our customers are requiring enterprise-class I/O capabilities in their midrange servers,” said John R. “Beau” Vrolyk, senior vice president, Computer Systems Business Unit, SGI. “The SGI 2100 server delivers bandwidth performance that puts our competitors’ top-of-the-line servers to shame by delivering more data-handling performance at a fraction of the price.”
