The IBM 7090 was announced in 1958 as a transistorized version of the vacuum tube-based IBM 709. Featuring a 36-bit word length with an address space of 32,768 words, as well as a processing speed of approximately 100 Kflop/s, the 7090 was six times faster than the earlier 709, and could be rented at half the price. In 1961, a 7090 was used to perform the first ever song sung via computer voice synthesis, “Daisy Bell”. The specific IBM 7090 entered here was used as a prop in the film “Hidden Figures”.
