The computer that marked IBM's return to the home market in 1990, five years after the PCjr. The main strength of the system was its flexibility to the average consumer. It was designed as a compact machine that easy to set up, easy to operate for novice users, and powerful enough to meet the needs of more advanced users.
The original 2011 model came with a 10 MHz Intel 80286 CPU and 512KB of on-board memory, expandable to 2.5 megabytes. For storage users could opt for a 1.44MB diskette drive or the diskette drive plus a 30 or 40MB hard disk. American models of the PS/1 also came with a built-in 2400-bits-per-second modem.
